BOOK REVIEW: “NEARING HOME: Life, Faith, and Finishing Well” by BILLY GRAHAM

Posted on

I have fond memories of 1997, when Billy Graham’s evangelistic meetings swept through the SF Bay Area. My college roommate gave his life to Jesus at the San Jose (Shark Tank) event. I have always admired Billy Graham’s outreach through the TV, the stadiums and the web. Funny enough, I had never read through any of his books.

Nearing Home is appropriately titled, as Rev. Graham writes and reflects on the “golden” years. Having lost his wife Ruth a few years ago, and many colleagues as well, this poignant book spoke wisdom into this 36-year old with grace and truth. He writes about baseball, retirement, finances, physical decline, and having a spiritual “root system”. Appropriately, he concludes the book with thoughtful remarks on the hope of heaven.

Surprisingly, the book does not begin NOR end with an evangelistic “pitch” to follow Jesus. Rather, it is tucked away in the center of the book, which is a great approach for those who need a little warming up to the reading. I am sure this book will impact many senior-aged readers, though my hope is that it will also serve as a baton-passing for those in my generation who have a great deal to learn from Billy Graham.
